Monfils Triumphs in Montpellier
Gael Monfils got back to winning ways after his tame 4th Round Australian Open defeat to eventual finalist Dominic Thiem, beating Vasek Pospisil 7-5 6-3 in the final in Montpellier. Monfils triumphed in 1 hour and 37 minutes to win his 3rd Montpellier title.
“It has been a great week. I am very pleased about my performance today,” said Monfils. “I think I played very solid again and I was very happy with the way I handled the key moments.” Pospisil was also positive about his performance, saying “It was an incredible week, I had great wins and I feel like I am definitely improving week-by-week. I will try to rest now, take a couple of days easy and get ready for the next event.”
Monfils, who is currently the World Number 9, will now attempt to defend his title in Rotterdam, where he beat several top players including Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka. Monfils has always struggled to play well consistently and maintain a top ranking, but at the age of 33, he has started to find the formula.
Joining Monfils in Rotterdam are the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Denis Shapovalov. Medvedev, who lost in the 4th Round of the Australian Open, will be looking to get his season back on track and start to defend all the points he collected last year.
